10 destinations to travel to in February

6 months ahead is usually a good time to start planning and booking a trip.  February is for many people a depressing month – the weather is rubbish, Christmas is finished and Easter still seems a long way off.  But it has some advantages – half term is a great opportunity for families and those involved in education to get that first break of the year.  Outside of this, however, prices are generally good and the earlier you can book the better they will be.

Here are some February travel ideas (I’ve missed out the Middle East as at the time of writing, it’s not really a great place to holiday).  The list is in no particular order of preference or importance.

  • Thailand, its generally dry across most of the country. A good time to combine a short stay in Bangkok with time on a beach.  There are hotels with amazing spas so you can revitalize body and mind before sunbathing or a snorkelling session.
  • Vietnam and Cambodia. Having been there in November last year, I can definitely say that these are incredible countries to visit, with welcoming people, amazing landmarks and delicious food.  Don’t miss Halong Bay – whether you sail on a traditional junk or a modern yacht.
  • Sri Lanka – take a tour to some of the highlights of the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, then relax on a beach. Climb the Sigiriya Lion Rock Fortress or discover wild elephants.
  • Costa Rica – so many people tell me now that this is at the top of their bucket list and why wouldn’t it be? Rainforests, diverse wildlife, volcanoes, beaches, and a top destination for eco-tourism.
  • South Africa – as we come into Spring, they are coming into Autumn. it’s a great time to visit Cape Town, the Garden Route and the Winelands.  Although the Kruger National Park will be hot, humid and rainy, the southern game reserves will be experiencing good weather.
  • The Maldives – for romance around Valentine’s Day, you can’t beat these islands. Perfect at any time of year for honeymooners and anniversary couples.  It’s generally sunny and warm.  A lot of islands and resorts to choose from, so we can match your interests and budget.
  • The Caribbean – more or less a year-round destination, but affordable in February. We stayed in the Dominican Republic one year in February and it was a lovely temperature.  Very busy with Canadians escaping their extremely cold winter.
  • Cape Verde – put on the map this year by their appearance in the World Cup. There are a few islands in the group, with gorgeous beaches, great for water-sports as well.  Out of my top 10, this is the closest to home for hot weather.
  • The Azores. It’s mild here rather than warm, maybe a bit of rain.  However, there are some great advantages to travelling in February.  Good for scenery and landscapes, hiking and whale watching.  Join my mailing list to receive my free guide packed with inspiration, insider tips and reasons to fall in love with these incredible islands.  https://mailchi.mp/b80036dd809a/your-perfect-azores-trip
  • Norway – for adventure any time of year. You can sail along the whole coast to explore the fjords.  But the main reason to explore in February is the chance of seeing the Northern Lights.  Best seen in the dark skies of winter.  Some interesting cities to discover – Tromso in the far north, Bergen further south and the capital Oslo.

Whether you want to chase the sun this winter or have some adventures – there are lots of destinations that you could choose.
