5 destinations for May holidays

Many resorts in the Med start their summer season, the weather is usually good, prices are lower than the height of the season – so lots of reasons to take your holiday in May.  Also a good time to travel if you don’t have to stick to school holidays.  Not just the Med, but many other worldwide destinations are quieter in May

As long as you avoid the UK bank holidays, prices are generally good.  Let’s have a look at some destinations.

  • Greece, this year try some of the smaller, less-known islands. You might have to fly to one island and then get a ferry to another, so best to go for more than 7 days to maximise your beach and exploration time.  Somewhere like Aegina, Agistri, Hydra, Karpathos, Spetses or Tilos.
  • Formentera – another island that you have to take a ferry to reach. This time from Ibiza. We’ve been here a couple of times many years ago and it was so unspoilt.  Looking at all the information now, it still is.  Lots of beautiful wide sandy beaches, relaxed life-style.  Once a haven for 1960s hippy culture, it is a slower pace of life.  The busiest beaches (well, they’re not as busy as a Benidorm beach) are Playa Migjorn and Es Pujols.  Explore the island by bike – only one hilly area means that it’s a lovely way to discover quiet bays.
  • Tunisia – not been so popular with travellers since a terrorist attack some years ago. However it is now back and encouraging tourists to visit, more security there means it is as safe as anywhere.  Not just gorgeous beaches and hotels with lots of great facilities – there’s also various archaeological sites dating back thousands of years.  For Star Wars fans, there are also filming locations in different areas of the country.
  • The largest island in the Med, Sicily, is another good destination for May travel. Hilltop towns and history from centuries of previous occupiers, as well as an active volcano.  Cathedrals and churches abound across the island.  Not only this, but there are golden and rocky beaches all round.  Plus Sicily is the home of the delicious dessert, cannoli.
  • Toronto for the cherry blossom – yes, the city is home to over 2000 cherry trees that bloom in May. Ideal for a trip to Niagara Falls without the busier crowds of the main summer months.  Definitely get to the top of the CN Tower and brave the EdgeWalk, the world’s highest full circle hands-free walk.
