21 years ago this week, the phones were on for the first time. This year we’re going to be celebrating 21 years of Diamond Travel, and this was our first week of trading. Wow so much has happened in the last 21 years – the world is such a different place now to what it was in January 2001. Just think of everything that has happened – from 9/11 to the Boxing Day tsunami and now COVID.
However it’s not all been bad! More destinations have become available for tourists to visit – Dubai and Iceland have become more popular over the period – the former as the Emirate has grown and provides so many thousands of hotel rooms. The latter because of the Northern Lights, volcanoes and lots of TV travel programmes! Travellers have become more adventurous – there are more activity holidays than ever before. Plus it is all easier to find and book for travel agents – our database of suppliers gets bigger every year. People will go to Australia for 2 weeks or Hong Kong for a weekend. Back in the 20th Century, this was definitely a rarity! Another trend is that of intergenerational holidays – families travelling with ages ranging from toddlers to great-grandparents. In many cases, the 2 week holiday isn’t as common – travellers go away for 3 or 4 breaks a year, with weekend breaks becoming more popular, saving the traditional fortnight for long haul or an adventure trip.
In 2016, UK residents went on more than 45 million foreign holidays, up from 27 million in 1996. Cruising is now four times as popular as it was in the mid-1990s. 2022 looks to be a year to travel (please go away COVID!!), so is it your year to travel somewhere new, do something different, try new experiences…..
