Apparently it’s Hammock Day in the USA today – not really hammock weather here though!
So I thought I’d look at where you can relax in a hammock! Firstly on the balcony of your cabin on a Virgin Voyages cruise – the red hammocks are made by a social enterprise in Thailand that fosters women’s empowerment. Each hammock is tagged with the maker’s name. All cabins with a balcony have these and they are extremely comfortable to enjoy the view.
With countless islands to choose from, the Caribbean offers a quintessential hammock experience. Many resorts, like Hammock Cove Antigua, cater specifically to hammock lovers, with private hammocks strung between palm trees overlooking turquoise waters. (photo from Hammock Cove).
Immerse yourself in the lush rainforests of Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica. Here, eco-lodges nestled amidst the rainforest canopy offer hammocks on their balconies, allowing you to sway gently while surrounded by the sights and sounds of the jungle.
The Greek Islands are a popular choice for a summer holiday, and many islands offer idyllic spots to relax in a hammock. For a truly unique experience, head to Milos where you can find hammocks strung up right on the volcanic rock formations. Mykonos offers lots of hammocks in hotels on the island.
The invention of hammocks can be traced back to the Central and South Americas at least 1000 years ago. They seem to have been introduced to Christopher Columbus by the Taino people of the Bahamas on his voyages to the New World, and he then brought the concept back for Europeans to enjoy. Later in the 1600s, it was discovered that hammocks worked well for sleeping on ships, as it tended to reduce the amount of seasickness suffered by the sailors.
