Holiday packing

Holiday Extras surveyed 600 customers this summer about their packing habits. Surprisingly it’s our menfolk who come back from holiday with the most unworn items. So although us girls may pack more, it’s because we need them.

They report “Across the sexes, more than half of holidaymakers surveyed said they took more shoes than they needed. Holiday Extras advises laying clothes out before packing to avoid taking similar items, restricting your colour range so more things coordinate and settling on three multi-purpose pairs of shoes plus some flip flops.”

So how do you pack? More and more charter flights are reducing the amount of luggage that you can check in the hold without extra charges. Packing less will have to become more common if you want to save money on your holiday costs. Many tour operators now have 15 kg checked in luggage per person as a norm instead of the 20kg we’ve all become used to.

How can you save weight therefore? Do you need to take your hairdryer, hair straightners or curling tongs? Many good hotels provide hairdryers and for the rest, let your hair relax on holiday – it may do it good!!

Books are my downfall in weight on holiday – I always take loads of books to read while relaxing by the pool. However it might, in the long-term, be worth investing in a Kindle, Ipad or other electronic reading device for reading instead. Much lighter and more choice of books electronically. But I like the printed page, I’ll miss having a book with curly pages from the library and if you drop your Ipad in the pool – much more expensive than buying a new book!

PS – did you know we can book all kinds of travel – by air, rail and sea!
