I love a road trip in the USA! Haven’t done this one (yet) but obviously it’s on my list! This trip has you starting in Atlanta – great choice as it has direct flights from London with Delta. I’ve been here at the end of another road trip and it was a really interesting city. For lovers of Coca Cola – you can tour the facility here and loads of tastings. However there’s more to the city – Martin Luther King was born here and you can visit his childhood home, along with museums commemorating his work and legacy. Margaret Mitchell, who wrote Gone with the Wind, was also an Atlanta local – not a huge memorial to her here however.
Once you’ve finished in Atlanta, the route takes you to Asheville in North Carolina. On the way, you’ll pass through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park which is the most visited National Park in the USA. Once in Asheville, visit a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway where you can hike or bike or just enjoy the beautiful scenery. The city itself has a vibrant food and beverage culture – from cafes to breweries.
Next hit the road again and head towards Charlotte. Stop off at the NASCAR Hall of Fame, but there’s lots for sports lovers in Charlotte. Watch basketball and baseball or explore the National Whitewater Center for some adrenaline activities.
Myrtle Beach is a classic beach town, with golden sandy beaches. Just stay here and relax for a few days.
Your next stop is Charleston – a historic city, with southern charm. With its signature antebellum mansions painted in a rainbow of colours and featuring elaborate ironwork. Join a walking tour for the best view of these homes, their gardens and the Battery, Charleston’s historic waterfront promenade.
If you like golf, the next part of the journey is perfect for you. About a two-hour drive from Charleston, Hilton Head Island offers pretty beaches, more than 20 world class golf courses and more
than 300 tennis courts. Savannah is the next stop – another charming and historic town, with pretty town squares.
The final leg of the trip takes you to Macon where you can visit the Tubman Museum, named after Harriet Tubman – a very important part of US history as an abolitionist. She helped runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad.
